Promoting Healthy Smiles
As a parent, you want your child to lead a healthy, happy life. Regular dental care and checkups will keep your child’s mouth healthy, which, in turn, promotes overall health. Children of all ages need clean, healthy mouths. These basic tips should help you understand how to properly care for your child’s smile…
Infants – Gently wipe your infant’s gums with a soft, moist washcloth after feedings.
Babies & Toddlers – Use a children’s toothbrush and non-fluoridated toothpaste to softly brush primary teeth twice daily. After consuming sugary or starchy foods, your child should rinse the mouth with water. Bring your child to a Happy Visit around age two – or sooner if you notice problems. At three years of age, children can begin regular checkups and cleanings every six months. We will help your child develop an easy and fun smile care routine to practice at home.
Children & Teens – Each day, your child should brush twice and floss once. A healthy diet – and no energy drinks – will help keep teeth strong. Be sure that your child drinks plenty of water and rinses the mouth after eating or drinking.
In some cases, the dentist may suggest sealants and fluoride to ward off tooth decay. If developmental problems exist, orthodontic treatment could be recommended. All children who participate in athletics should wear a mouthguard. Ask us about a custom mouthguard at your child’s checkup.
