Checkups & Cleanings

Comprehensive Checkups

We like to see you in our Flint, MI dental office, but if you want to spend less time at the dentist’s, come in every six months for a checkup and cleaning. We want you to enjoy optimal oral health, starting today. Regular checkups allow the dentist to look for signs of gum disease, oral cancer, tooth decay, and tooth wear. When we address these problems in the earliest stages, you’ll:

  • Reduce your potential for pain
  • Reduce your future dental care expenses
  • Retain more natural tooth structure
  • Enjoy a healthy, fully functioning mouth
  • Reduce your potential for tooth loss
  • Improve your potential for good overall health

The dentist will show you radiographs of your teeth, then explain his findings and recommendations. Please feel free to ask questions. We’ll work with you to develop a practical plan for affordable dental care and long-term oral health.

Gum Disease & Dental Cleanings

Gum disease is the leading cause of tooth loss for American adults, and it increases a person’s risk for serious overall health complications, including stroke, Alzheimer’s disease, osteoporosis, and heart attacks. Over 75% of our adult population has some form of gum disease, but many are unaware. In the early stage, gum disease presents few symptoms. Gums may be puffy, red, tender, or they could bleed when brushed. Untreated, gum disease will rapidly progress. Bacteria destroy the bond between teeth and gums, gum tissue recedes, teeth loosen, and a nasty odor is emitted.

By attending professional hygiene visits, or “cleanings,” every six months, you’ll allow us to help you ward off gum disease. The hygienist will remove bacteria-causing plaque and hardened plaque, called tartar, from your teeth. If you show signs of gum disease, we will recommend a deep cleaning, which involves scaling and root planing, and a soft tissue management plan. Scaling removes plaque below the gum line, and root planing smoothes rough areas on teeth roots, where plaque gathers.

Once you’re on a soft tissue management plan, you’ll return to our office every few months for a cleaning. During these appointments, we’ll track your progress and help you work toward maintaining healthy, strong gum tissue. If gum disease progresses to advanced stages, the dentist may refer you to a periodontist for specialty care.
